hey this page is really old, so come in through the front door.

Smash II

It all began rather innocently when I purchased a stereo and some speakers at a garage sale. I wanted the speakers and basically got the the stereo for free, which is good because nothing worked on the stereo except one of the tape decks. The other tape deck was busted and the 5-CD carousel wouldn't play anything. So what to do with an inoperable piece of hardware? Fast forward a few weeks to my office's change of residence and the need to clean out old crap. Among the old crap: two long-expired monitors. My boss said to chuck them, but I had something a little more interesting in mind.

I'm sure we've all seen Office Space, so my plan was similar to that film's climactic scene wherein the main characters go out into a field to take out their frustrations on an otherwise unsuspecting piece of malfunctioning hardware. Armed with two monitors and a stereo, we gathered some friends together (DeLaine, Richard, Natalie), got some beer and Girl Scout cookies, went to Matt's backyard and proceeded to bludgeon the almighty heck out of things. Brian brought an axe and a sledgehammer (which Richard broke).

That was Smash I. I didn't bring my camera to that one, but Brian and Matt took pictures and maybe I'll get off my butt to bring them in someday. Meanwhile here are some pictures from Smash II, which, as you might guess from the title, indicates that we're going to try to do these things more often. Email me if you have hardware to donate. Also check out Brian's far more comprehensive gallery.

Smash II was attended by London's own John Mumford, taking Matt's place (Matt was on the disabled list with a sprained wrist). So here are the pictures from Smash II where we took down a monitor and a couple of servers that Brian brought.
